The Sculptural Cake Edit: 30 Artful Cakes for Modern Weddings
Creating bold reception focal points, we’ve selected 30 designs that reimagine the traditional wedding cake as edible art.
Stacked, sculptural and texturally whipped — wedding cakes are quietly becoming the architectural centrepieces of the reception. Less dessert, more installation, we’ve selected [x] designs that reimagine the traditional wedding cake as edible art.
Among the makers shaping this movement, Lalina and SNP Cake Atelier each bring a distinct approach to form. Lalina works in poetic brushstrokes and fluid silhouettes, twisting softness into sculpture. SNP Cake Atelier draws from classical forms, reinterpreting them into contemporary compositions that play with balance and texture.
Mastering the art of storytelling through culinary art and flavor profiles that imprint, these designers share advice for choosing modern wedding cake designs that transcend the moment.

When you begin working with a couple, where does the design conversation start?
SNP Cake Atelier: “It always begins with the couple’s story. We love to sit down with our couples and get to know who they are, their likes and dislikes, personalities, aesthetic preferences, their hobbies, and the feeling they want to create for their celebration. We enjoy looking through their moodboards, wedding themes, or even small personal details like their favorite flowers, colours, or shared memories. From there, we translate those sentiments into form, texture, and flavor, so the cake becomes more than just a centerpiece; it becomes a reflection of the couple and their relationship.”.
When selecting a modern cake design, what makes a cake feel timeless rather than trend-driven?
SNP Cake Atelier: “For us, a timeless cake is all about emotion and the personalities of our bride and groom. Trends can be beautiful and exciting, but what really stands the test of time is something that feels genuine, a design that reflects the couple and fits naturally with the atmosphere of their day. We believe there is no right or wrong when it comes to wedding cake designs.
We also believe that the idea of ‘timeless’ can mean something different for everyone. Subtle details, craftsmanship, and balance make a design feel right, even after many years. Every couple has their own story, and that’s what makes each cake special and timeless in its own way. We love encouraging our couples to explore their ideas, while staying true to what they love, what feels like them, what they’ve always dreamed of for their wedding day, rather than following what’s popular at the moment.”.
For couples exploring sculptural cakes, where should they begin in understanding what style feels true to them?
Lalina: “It always begins with emotion rather than aesthetics. I encourage couples to think about how they want their celebration to feel — intimate, bold, whimsical, romantic, or avant-garde. From there, we translate those feelings into form, texture, and movement. Looking beyond traditional wedding imagery helps too in doing something unconstrained. Architecture, art installations, and even nature can reveal what resonates most deeply.
A sculptural cake should feel like a natural extension of the couple’s story and the visual language of their day, not a separate showpiece.”.

Which forms, surfaces, or textures are you exploring at the moment?
Lately, I’ve been drawn to contrasts — the dialogue between raw and refined. Poured plaster finishes against high-gloss fondant, or fragmented edges that mimic carved stone. I’m also exploring fluid, gravity-defying silhouettes inspired by modern sculpture and movement — pieces that feel almost mid-motion. Tactile surfaces, subtle irregularities, and architectural balance fascinate me; they bring a sense of life and imperfection that feels deeply human, even within sugar and form. I am always intrigued to explore new combinations of ingredients to create textures thus new feels & mediums bespoke and unexplored.
SNP Cake Atelier: “We’ve been exploring the silhouette of fabric, how it drapes, folds, cascades, and flows, translating that softness into cake design. We want to capture the gentle curves and movement that fabric naturally creates.
We’ve been experimenting with creating a fabric-like material on the cake, and from there, playing with its opacity. Solid, opaque colors can make a design feel more robust and grounded, while exploring translucency gives the cake a delicate, airy, and light appearance. It’s been so much fun exploring these ideas, especially with a few couples who allowed us to use this technique. What’s incredible is how each design comes out completely different. The drape, the flow, and the opacity all come together in a way that feels unique to that couple and their story.”.
Tips for styling a cake table to showcase a sculptural design
Lalina: “A sculptural cake benefits from breathing space and intention. We treat the table as a gallery plinth rather than a buffet surface — clean lines, minimal clutter, and a height that aligns with the eye level of your guests. We highly emphasize on using lighting strategically: soft directional light emphasizes form and texture, while shadows add depth. If to introduce florals or textiles, we let them echo the cake’s palette or geometry rather than compete with it. The goal is harmony — allowing the cake’s artistry to command quiet attention.”.
